Shey-Phoksundo National Park

Shey Phoksundo National Park is the largest national park of Nepal. It covers an area of about 3500 kilometer square. The second largest lake of Nepal, Phoksundo Lake, is located in this park. The lake’s outlet is a huge waterfall, the highest to be found in the country. The altitude variations in the park (from 2130 m to 6883 m) provide different elevation points with different climatic conditions and diverse species of flora and fauna.

The park is considerably popular with tourists. Decent accommodations and other tourist facilities make the park an attractive destination for those who are looking for some thrilling yet comfortable days in the lap of nature. The natural beauty of the park is immensely rejuvenating and serene. All in all, if you are planning a visit to the park, you are likely to go back extremely impressed and revitalized.

It is not difficult to reach the park. The best way is to take a flight to the Juphal airstrip that is located in Dolpa and thereafter walking to the entrance of the park.

The winters can be cruelly freezing at Shey Phoksundo. And the monsoons are likely to create unwanted disruptions in your plans. Therefore, summers are the best time to visit the park.

There are both individual and group trekking treks at Shey Phoksundo National Park. You can easily enjoy your days camping here since there are comfortable camping facilities complete with toilets and rubbish pits in the park.

Wildlife enthusiasts are guaranteed a treat—musk deer, Himalayan black beers, snow leopards, Tibetan partridges, blue sheep, yellow-throated martens, grey wolves and many other exotic wildlife species are found in the park. The world’s highest flying butterfly can also be spotted in the park. In addition to this, there are many monasteries located in the park as well that give the tourists opportunity to get acquainted with the religious customs and beliefs of Nepal.
